Here at Glitchslap we love cosplay, especially local cosplayers! We got the chance to interview local cosplayer Xander D and got to talk about where he started, his advice on how to cosplay, and who he’s out to get!
Q: What got you started in cosplay?
A: Originally “Heroes of Cosplay” introduced me to it. Before that, I had no idea what it was. Once I did my first cosplay, Albert Wesker, and was able to transform into one of my favorite characters, I was done. I was addicted to the max.
Q: Who is your biggest inspiration?
A: Leon Chiro is a pretty big inspiration when it comes to cosplay. He’s a very talented guy and stays healthy, which I am a huge fan of. I like the whole fit/sexy geek thing. And he really gets into his characters and knows his stuff.
Q: Who is your favorite character to cosplay as?
A: It would have to be Albert Wesker from the Resident Evil game series. I’ve done a couple different versions of him and he is by far one of my favorite villains. And he was my first. That means something.
Q: Have you done any competitions?
A: Yes, my first contest was at Video Games Live last year. I lost to Kiba the Cosplay Corgi….yeah. But that hasn’t stopped me! I enter contests whenever I can. Nothing major yet, but a few little ones here and there. (PS: I love Kiba. No hard feelings!)
Q: What is your favorite part of cosplay? (Making the costume, debuting it, people’s reactions, going to cons, etc)
A: Probably debuting it. It’s always a great feeling to wear a costume for the first time and when you meet the big fans of whatever character you’re portraying is a huge reward. It’s like instant best friend status because you can relate to each other’s fandoms. It’s awesome.
Q: Do you play video games, and if so, do you have a favorite?
A: HELL YES. I am a pretty big gamer. My favorite series would have to be Mass Effect, Resident Evil, Deus Ex, and Assassin’s Creed. Sorry, I can’t really pick one. All these games are big on the story and they are well thought out. I like games that I can get attached to and really get close to the characters.
Q: Do you have any advice for people trying to get into cosplay?
A: Just do it. I hear this question a lot and my advice is always just try it. If you can’t make the costume yourself, put something together. Thrift stores are good for geeks haha. Throw something together and try it and once you start it’s a lot easier to find the motivation to move on to bigger things and bigger projects. Even if your costume isn’t perfect, own the character and have fun. There you go. You’re cosplaying.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
A: I’m gonna get you Kiba! You can’t have all the ladies!
